Cisco:s Netflow is a technology used to get control over traffic patterns in LAN and WAN. Netflow was originally a proprietary Cisco technology has now been standardized under the name sFlow. All major vendor of layer 3 switches and routers today supports sFlow. Also see our technology page about Netflow.
Scrutinizer is an extremely simple and complete tool to analyze and present Netflow and sFlow information from routers or level 3 switches in your network. Instead of installing expensive equipment on your Internet access you simply catch the information from your router. All Cisco routers support netflow export and the Pix firewall's will add that functionality shortly.
It is very simple to get started with Scrutinizer. Install the software and configure the router to send Netflow information to your management station (one line) then the information starts to appear in the Scutinizer web interface. If you don't own the router it is possible to get some operators to send you the information from your Internet router. You can also configure alarms to certain events so you can have alerts with details about critical errors or overloads.
Network Tools have also a special developed Netflow probe to boot an ordinary PC with a software that listen to the connected network and send Netflow information. This software is distributed on a USB memory stick. You can download a freeware version of Scrutinizer with limited functionality and test the benefits. Now you can easily get information of how your Internet connection is used!
